The first thing you need to decide is what you are planning to use the blender for. Do you simply want to blend drinks or make smoothies or make green smoothies? Will you be crushing ice with it? What about the capacity to grind grain or mix dough? Many blenders today are combination blenders / food processors - is this something you would like?

Various designs offer various perks. Do the blades come out for cleaning? Does the lid fit tightly? Can you add ingredients while the blender is blending? These options may help you choose one blender over another.

Finally, take a look at the size and design. Will it be on your counter or in your cupboard? Take a look at the height to see if it will fit where you want it. Do you like the color?
